Using scans of a Victoria's Secret catalog my wife was about to throw away, I picked heads with stark and soft lighting to practice 5-Value head studies. The photography is always professional, and the faces are ideal. Studying the facial structure of the models (and of course, their figures) is great for solving problems as a portrait painter.

It has long been held that good paintings keep tha values simple and in distinct light and dark families, separating the shadows from the lights. In this series I do monochrome and color studies on gessoed panels.

Making your own gessoed panels can be quick and easy. Look for my videos on how to make panels.
